Orbitz Volley Pong
Orbitz faced a major challenge when it entered the red-hot online travel space several years ago. Established players like Travelocity and Expedia had effectively boxed the new site from landing any major portal deals: Expedia had an exclusive deal with its parent, MSN and Travelocity had inked multi-year deals with AOL and Yahoo.
So Orbitz decided to invest heavily in a bold new form of advertising: pop-ups. Orbitz used pop-ups to successfuly drive traffic and grown their brand. Years later, Orbitz is still using pop-ups . . . with a twist. Recently, Slicksta was served the Orbitz VolleyPong ad unit. Great fun! Orbitz added “Tell a Friend” links and a microsite to house the game and make the pop-up into a viral program.
